Adobe house rebuild in the Gers, France

This deteriorating Cob (mud and straw) farmhouse was purchased by an English family with a view to rebuilding it approximately in its previous configuration.

Provided permit documentation for approved by the local council who were interested in maintaining the building as it had become a landmark in this lovely rural valley.

The photos show where a large area of wall has already slumped down due to water infiltration into the cob behind the original protective layer of rendering.

Eventually, exterior decks and pool will open onto the meadow down to the stream at the bottom of the property.

Cottage in Saint Christophe, France

Saint Christophe is a fairly isolated village on the high plateau above the Viaur river valley. Many of the small enclaves of habitation, like this one, have been in decline for years.

The owner purchased this property to rebuild the ruined farm and barn structures to live in and eventually develop a discrete new rental property of several units on part of the site.

Provided measured survey, design and permit drawings for the project.

The small existing cottage was re-designed as the first phase of the project. As in most older stone buildings that have been left untouched for years, this structure had deteriorated to a dangerous state of disrepair.

House at Castelnau de Montmiral,
SW France

This house used to be part of a working farm. The new owners wanted to maximize the usable space by converting the existing Cow Barn into a lounge, and a loft into a visitors apartment.

The building is typical of the region with thick limestone walls and Spanish roof tiles. Ancient oak beams were retained and restored.

Several new wall penetrations were made to allow plenty of light into the existing spaces and views out to the countryside. All of the windows were oak, custom made in the regional style.

Provided the design, survey and permit drawings for the English owners.

House, Gallery and Garden, SW France

A 13th Century hilltop fortress town, known for its gothic and medieval architecture, Cordes-Sur-Ciel had a renaissance as a center for artists in the 1940's.

The entire town is a listed historic monument with strict conservation rules for exterior changes, including choice of color, style of moldings, etc.

This gallery, house and garden were neglected, with a variety of structural and plumbing defects that needed attention. Changes were made to create a quiet, convivial ambience utilizing natural materials throughout.

Design and coordination of the renovation work with local artisans. The roof, storefront, bathrooms, floors, staircase, garden and terrace were all replaced and brought back to life over a number of years.
