 Adaptive Conservation

Moulin Art Studio, SW France

This watermill has been changed over the centuries with several additions to the structure. As with most old buildings in France, there are no existing drawings and it is always necessary to have a measured survey to understand the spatial and structural limitations. After some research, it was discovered that the moulin was in a flood zone and that the ground floor would not be permitted for habitation. Consequently, all of the living space was planned into the upper stories, with studios on the ground floor.

Provided all of the surveys, design drawings and negotiations for the permit.

The plan is to clear out the waterways under the building, rebuild the mill headrace barrier in the river, rebuild the electrical switchgear and turbines and use the power to run the art studios.

Ancient Barn and Terrace into a Restaurant, SW France

This building and terrace are in one of the most historically important 13th Century villages in France. Strictly controlled by the local conservation architect, any building work had to be discussed and approved by a committee of officials.

All areas in the project had to be accessible, just like in the US, and the exterior appearance had to respect the local vernacular.

The new owner wanted to change this derelict

barn and terrace into a small restaurant with spectacular views over the valley to the south.

Provided all of the design, permit documentation and negotiations with the mayor's office.

Maison de Maitre into Lodging House, SW France

This Maison de Maitre (Masters House) was built by a wealthy property owner in the village of Verfeil-sur-Ver, SW France. The belvedere tower at the back provided the owner with views over his adjoining fields and workers.

The building was in a very poor state from years of neglect and water intrusion. The new owners engaged me to make a complete survey of the property, design the new six-unit interior lodge

(chamber d'hôte) and obtain a permit from the local mayor. I also provided construction management for this first phase of the work.

Working with local contractors, the roof was completely repaired, adding skylights and future air vents in their final locations. Most of the interior was stripped-out ready for the interior build-out.
